
I think we all remember this famous New Yorker cover that depicts a Manhattanite's view of world geography. They have a similar view here in Nantucket. They use the expression "Off Island" to describe everything that happens "out there" in places that are NOT Nantucket.
"So, Muffy, where were you last week?" "I was Off Island." This could mean Hyannis which is 30 miles away by ferry, or Timbuktu. It doesn't matter. You can only be one of two places on Earth, Off or On island. It's kind of like being pregnant. Or not.
