WOLFGANG AMADEUS FACEBOOK

Years ago there was a movie, AMADEUS, about the famous composer, Mozart. In the movie, the King was critical of some music based upon it having "Too Many Notes." This suggested mostly that this aristocrat just did not like it but could not articulate a legitimate musical reason for it. That's the way I feel about FACEBOOK, TWITTER, MySPACE, and most of the rest of social networks. It is the modern day equivalent of C B Radio as in... "10-4 good buddy, what's your 20?" That is to say, it is people who say too many words signifying nothing. An opportunity for the intellectually disabled to talk to their peers. Sure, these sites have legitimate uses in business and are invaluable to promoting products and services for SOME people. For the other 5 Billion people it is electronic verbal diarrhea...akin to the soccer mom leaving her house in the morning, turning on her cell phone and talking continuously about ? all day on a cell phone plan that has unlimited minutes. Or the 2000 texts per month that the average school child sends to his or her friends. Maybe all this electromagnetic wave generation is what is increasing serious disease (other than terminal insipidity) among our species. All those waves bombarding our heads all day... radio, TV, cell phones, texts, Wi-Fi, it's enough to make a fella go out and buy a roll of aluminum foil to make a protective helmet.

  1. I guess it will come as no surprise that I would like to respond. You do make some valid points, but I do think that the advent of social networks has enabled one thing that's priceless and that's connectivity. If it weren't for a site like Facebook or another called LinkedIn, I wouldn't have gotten back in touch with my best friend from high school (and subsequently reconnected with several others as well as distant family members) nor would a recruiter have seen my resume (through one of my connections) and offered me the job I currently hold today. Yes, most of the online world is drivel, but don't assume it's all nonsense or useless. Yes, I work in PR so this is my domain, but it is irrefutable that benefits outweigh the detriments. It is what you make it, and as you blog away, think about the possibility of being able to chronicle your experiences and your musings from all the way in Nantucket and share them with your followers, friends and family sprinkled all over the place.
