ANY COLOR as long as it's GRAY

Preserving the historical nature of Nantucket is utmost in the minds of those in charge here. It gets a little annoying at times when you want to "step out" architecturally, but I appreciate their steadfastness. As this photo taken yesterday on Old North Wharf demonstrates, the color of Nantucket comes from its flowers. The buildings are almost all faded gray from the cedar shakes used on the exterior walls. The trim is mostly white though there are a few other muted colors.

You can decorate the inside of your home anyway you want, as long as there are starfish or whales somewhere. Without those two style statements, you might as well be in Hoboken. The painted white wood, 12" wide pine flooring, and hooked rugs are common design elements. After spending some time here and going from "I did not notice that all the houses were the same color" to "Why do all the houses have to be the same color?" to "There's something pleasing about all the houses being the same color" you understand the theory a little better. Without sounding "My island is better than your island" this is one of the things that makes Nantucket more restful and vintage-historical than Martha's Vineyard the next island to the west.

  1. Wonderful post and a terrific photograph too! Couldn't agree more with your sentiments on the gray shingles--the homogeneity of Nantucket is a big reason why she is such a tranquil island. I think you will be interested in my blog @ nantucketboy.blogspot.com
