I wrote last year about buying a bicycle and the feedback I got about how it should not cost too much or look too new and that rust and patina were important. The same goes for polo shirts. If your color is bright and your collar has perfect corners, you are out of style. Then there's the logo. Never bigger than a nickel. If you have one of those TOMMY HILLFIGER shirts with the name running around your chest and onto your back... go to Martha's Vineyard. Right away. Even if it says NANTUCKET, the name should not be big enough to read without reading glasses. Preferably it should be a small yacht club burgee flag about the size of a congressional lapel pin. As for which yacht club... The vintage New York Yacht Club is wonderful. Island based clubs have a pecking order but I will not go into that as Oxen will be gored. Anything where you have to go through an admission process and prove that your great great grandfather actually harpooned a whale, is the best.

CLASSIC CARS IN NANTUCKET
"My stuff is OLDER than your stuff" seems to be rampant in Nantucket. From the clothes ( this is an original Murray's Nantucket Red shirt from the 1960s) to Handbags (Whaling Lighthouse Basket made by Ramos) to houses (my house was built in 1863 and smells like it) to cars like this vintage JEEP, the natives here take great pride in owning things until they disintegrate into dust. Admittedly they do keep their treasures clean and polished.
