Many other names in common use come from the occupation of the family at the time last names became necessary due to population growth. First names were no longer enough where there were 150 "Johns" in the same town.. A Cooper is a barrel maker, Tailor (or TAYLOR), Barker, Butcher, Farmer, you get it. Another form of family name which may have preceded the occupation one (John the Farmer, not John the Butcher) is John the son of William or John Willamson. Or, Charles the son of Steven or Charles Stevenson. Etc.

The NAMES Came from SOMEWHERE
Things we use or speak about in our daily lives have names. Many of these names come from the inventor of the device. The one that comes to mind first is the "crapper" which was actually a form of indoor plumbing perfected by a man named...Crapper. I guess that the family that invented this popular internment apparatus was named Coffin, a historical family on Nantucket that hails from England.
