The YOUNG VICTORIA

Last night's movie was delightful. It was the story of Queen Victoria of England's coming of age and seizing the throne despite clever attempts to "handle her" by her mother and others. She is romanced by and eventually marries Prince Albert and has 9 children, all of whom eventually make it big in the monarch biz as well. I am sure all the young kids, especially girls, throughout the commonwealth have seen this a dozen times. There is no equivalent in american culture. Can you imagine "Young Bill Clinton" It would have an X rating and school kids would have to sneak into theaters or watch it on the internet. Young John Edwards getting his first $400 haircut and sleeping with his middle school teacher? Young Hillary Rodham...even Charlize Theron who played serial killer Eileen Wornos wouldn't take the part. So we colonists have to satisfy ourselves with the lives of English Queens, like Freddie Mercury and Elton John. Oh, and I shall absolutely NOT tell the joke about "Do you have Prince Albert in the can?"
